My Aunt Nancy from Houston was visiting when Hurricane Harvey struck; her house & car were flooded; she flies home today to see the extent of the damage. My cousin’s home was also flooded; her family is out of their home with their 2 children, one of whom is special needs. They are fortunate to have friends to stay with & are grateful for their safety.
I’ve been wondering how to help. Today I saw (on Facebook) Brene Brown, an author many of us respect & admire, request support for a Houston nonprofit, Undies for Everyone. She talks about how people donate clothing, but not underwear. She explains that people are in need of clean underwear — it’s an issue of dignity and cleanliness. This resonated with me…I donate clothes to various organizations, but never underwear.
Undies for Everyone has made donating simple. Go to Amazon via the link below. This is their wishlist — you select items you want to order, than use the address below (in bold) as the shipping address (the local Hillel is collecting). Or, use the organization’s website to make a donation directly. I shipped underwear directly from Amazon as I’ve heard there is a shortage of things in local stores.
This seems like a very quick easy thing for us to do that would provide for a basic need…and more importantly, help someone maintain their dignity.
2. Collect new, packaged underwear and mail it to the address below. It’s our local Hillel and they are collecting for us. This is a really great neighborhood or school project. If you’re purchasing, we recommend Hanes or Fruit of the Loom. UFE doesn’t process or give out anything but underwear!
